The Monthly Rundown: Austin in January

Even though the holiday season is over, Austin still has plenty of exciting events going on in January. These are some of the events to look forward to attending.

American Flags Exhibit

If you enjoy learning about history and seeing historical artifacts, make plans to head to Bullock Texas State History Museum for the American Flags Exhibition. This exhibit features flags from throughout our country’s history, including a 13-star flag that’s 200 years old. Learn more about how the American flag has changed over the years, and view original pieces of art featuring the flag.

Free Week

If you love music, put Austin’s Free Week on your 2017 calendar. From Jan. 1 to Jan. 8, you can enjoy free musical performances at local venues. Visit participating venues during this week, and you’ll have a chance to hear local and regional bands at no cost. If you’re new to the Austin area, keep in mind that this is a great opportunity to meet other music lovers in the city and make new friends after moving.

7th Annual Austin Gorilla Run

If you want to support a good cause while also having fun, consider attending the 7th Annual Austin Gorilla Run. The event, which takes place on Jan. 28, features participants in gorilla suits running a 5K. Funds from the Gorilla Run are used to support the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, an organization that focuses on helping this endangered species. For a registration fee, you get a gorilla suit that’s yours to keep. You can also unwind after the 5K run with some beer at the annual after party. If you have kids who want to participate, keep in mind that gorilla suits are also available in smaller sizes.

Donation Spotlight: Paralyzed Veterans of America

At Patriot Relocation Company, we dedicate a portion of our earnings from your move to a veterans association of your choosing. While you might already have an organization in mind, we would also like to raise awareness of other groups that are helping veterans. This month’s donation spotlight is Paralyzed Veterans of America, an organization that has been around for 70 years. This organization’s mission is to provide assistance to paralyzed veterans and also work toward ensuring civil rights for the disabled in general. Paralyzed Veterans of America also supports medical research that can help those with disabilities, such as spinal cord research.

Patriot’s Pro Moving Tip

Before you unplug your electronics and pack them away, take pictures of them. Having a picture provides you with a convenient visual guide, so you can unpack them and get them plugged in easily at your new home.
